Glyfada to Poros, Hydra, Tselevinia

Many years ago, two small islands, Sferia and Kalavria, together created the “Little Venice of the Saronic Gulf”; the island of Poros. At a stone’s throw from Athens, this island was loved by many famous people, such as Giorgos Seferis and Henry Miller. It is located across from Galatas, looking like a puzzle piece that escaped from the Peloponnese. Taverns, marinas and yachts, neoclassical buildings, a clock that has been there since 1927 and is visible from every part of the city, pine trees that reach all the way to the sea, peace and serenity. The famous lemon forest is located opposite the island of Poros, east of Galata. Tens of thousands of lemon trees reach all the way to the beach, watermills, streams and the church of Agios Seraphim (since 1900 AD) create a magical setting. On foot, by bike or by boat, Poros invites you to discover the happiness hidden in its simplicity.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum in Koryzi Square, admire the findings from the temple of Poseidon, ancient Troizina and Methana. In the center of Poros, among the pines you will find the ruins of the Doric sanctuary of Poseidon, built in the 6th century BC of light blue limestone. During the night, the lights reflect in the water, giving the landscape a cosmopolitan atmosphere, with drinks, cocktails, shots and music. By visiting the island by boat one can admire its special color and atmosphere, as it is built amphitheatrically and stands out for its beautiful view.

Next stop for our excursion is the island of Hydra, which being so close to Athens, this small, mountainous island in the Saronic Gulf enchants its visitors with its picturesqueness, rich history and cultural charm. Hydra is an island where cars are not allowed, but also an island that cultivated the revolution that led to the independence of an entire country. The city of Hydra, Kaminia, Vlichos, Molos, Episkopi and Mandraki make up the whole island that is explored in a long walk.

When you get there, you will immediately feel this different life pace. The main port is cosmopolitan and elegant, with 18th century mansions, captains’ houses, old churches, wells and marble alleys that go up to every part of the island. As soon as you climb the cobbled streets of the port, you will feel like you live in another century, as the well-preserved mansions could have come from the set of an old movie.

The long naval history of Hydra is present in the port. The cannons still aiming at the Aegean, as great revolutionary men lived on this island, such as Andreas Miaoulis and Georgios Koundouriotis. At the same time, however, there is the cosmopolitan side of Hydra, as on this island, for example, the film “Boy on a Dolphin” starring Sophia Loren was shot. In addition, Hydra has always been a favorite haven for jet setters and rock stars, such as Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, Rex Harrison, Peter Ustinov, Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, with frequent visits to the island. and famous artists such as Picasso, Chagall and Miller.

The Pavilion, Cave and Hydroneta are three must-see parts of the island located by the sea. At the Pavilion, stop and enjoy the view, admiring the huge cannons. In the beautiful Cave, have a relaxing coffee before diving. At the pier of Hydroneta you can relax and then head straight for lunch.

Do not neglect to see the Mansion of Tompazis, which houses the School of Fine Arts, the Historical Archive-Museum, located east of the port and the Merchant Marine Academy. The internationally known Greek collector Dakis Ioannou chose an old slaughterhouse to create an exhibition space called DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art. Every summer, innovative exhibits, and events with international flair attract famous visitors from all over the world.

Go up to the oldest settlement of Hydra, Kiafa, which is located at a great height above the port. This gem consists of narrow alleys, impressive mansions, old grocery stores and boutique hotels. Walking in the seven windmills at the top of the hill of Agios Athanasios you will be rewarded by the stunning view.
