Glyfada to Spetses
The island of Spetses is one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan islands of the Saronic Gulf, named during the Venetian occupation, due to its many fragrant flowers (isola di spezzie, i.e. island of scents). Spetses has historically emerged as one of the strongest naval and commercial powers. You will definitely want to come back to this cosmopolitan island near Athens. It is an ideal destination for a quick getaway all year round, whether you are enjoying a relaxing coffee in Dapia overlooking Costa and Porto Heli, or taking a romantic stroll to the Old Port.
Carriages, cycling and walking will be your only means of transportation and to visit the well-preserved mansions under the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, the shipyards and the Bouboulina Museum. The houses and cannons of the neoclassical captains from the revolution of 1821 tell a story unique to Spetses. Indeed, this is an island full of history and the locals are willing to tell the stories of their naval victories and local heroes. Archaeological findings date back to 3000 BC. Do not miss the Bouboulina Museum, where many personal items of the naval commander of the War of Independence are on display. The Mansion of Chatzigiannis Mexis, which was the first governor of Spetses, is another must-see spot on the island, as it is one of the most impressive mansions.
We must not forget that the atmosphere of the legendary Poseidon Hotel near the port is incredibly idyllic and this hotel has occasionally hosted kings, politicians and officials. Spetses has long been a favorite getaway for high society, as reflected in gastronomic restaurants, clubs, art shops and elegant boutiques. There is no end to the cosmopolitan neighborhood in the Old Port. Tables with candles, romantic terraces, gourmet food and fine wine and soft music. And as the night progresses, there are plenty of bars and clubs to choose from. Regarding the beaches of the island, Agia Marina, Kouzounos, Xylokeriza, Vrelos, Soles, Zogeria with their beautiful clear waters are isolated beaches with pebbles and sand shaded by pines. Also, on the beach of Agioi Anargyroi you will discover the impressive cave of Bekiris.
In about two (2) hours from our departure from Glyfada or in one (1) hour from Hydra, we will reach Spetses. You can start your day by swimming in the beautiful bay of Zogeria with its clear blue waters. We will then visit the Cave of Bekiris and pass by the famous islet of Spetsopoula. Finally, we will end up at the old port where you will have plenty of time to walk the picturesque coastal route and enjoy your meal in one of the seaside restaurants or visit its famous museums. During our return around the middle of our route we can make a quick stop to swim in the clear blue waters of the Tselevinia Islands.
